Couches need new clothes too

I found this old couch in my neighborhood via kijiji. I decided I would host a bridal shower at my apartment but realized I didn’t have a couch. People like to sit in comfortable furniture, right? So in a couple days I picked up the tattered french provincial seat, purchased the fabric, foam, etc. Then I stripped the couch completely, down to it’s wooden frame, taking note how the pieces were initially put together. The following night I stayed up all night until the sun came up working away on it. Let me tell you, couches are hard to make, especially when it’s your first time.

Luckily, the previous owner was kind enough to email me this photo, because I was so anxious to get into it that I forgot to take a before photo!

One of the ladies that came over called it a Tiffany blue couch and now I like it even more! I’ll post some photos of the process later

Black Lace

My current project has been inspired by this beauty. The dress is from Swedish designer Rodebjer (A/W 2010) and is also being sold at Urban Outfitters, for $399. I have some black lace fabric from the formal section at Fabricville. I’m going to make a simple shift dress and sew in the solid black parts underneath. To be continued

I found this silver sequin fabric at Fabricville the other day:

I had an immediate vision of shiny New Year’s Eve 2010 leggings. So I bought a metre of it, just enough to make a pair of skinny slacks. The problem is now I’m dreaming up other sparkly possibilities. Maybe I want shorts, with black tights underneath? Or a mini skirt? A baggy tee? I won’t make them all. I just want ONE token celebratory item!

I moved out of my parent’s house into an apartment uptown less than a month after finishing university. This was just over a year ago now, when I was broke and didn’t have much to furnish my new space. Of what I could scrounge up, I had two ugly lampshades. They were fit to be tossed but the big wire rings could still be recycled after ripping the yellowed pleated fabric out. I found some pretty white textured wallpaper at the hardware store, glued it around the wire rings at both ends, and then finished them with some double-fold bias tape for a clean trim.

If you’re anything like me and always on the go, your jewelry is probably rattled across the dresser, in the bathroom, on your bedroom floor, just about anywhere. I’ve been trying to come up with an easy and good-looking way to keep it organized while still being able to find a necklace before dashing out the door. I came up with a solution. It was as easy as wrapping a perforated piece of flexible metal from the hardware store, around a nifty piece of driftwood and then screwing it in the wall. I really like the results; sort of a beachy look with the jewels hanging off the branches, and there seem to be plenty of branches to keep my collection of beads and chains expanding.

Welcome to I am Kellerful! The best thing about mid-January is that it is still considered the beginning of the new year, which means it’s the perfect time to finally launch my blog I’ve been talking about doing for so long. Here you will find some of my creations and it gives me an opportunity to share some of my inspiration.

I glance over to my nightstand where a tiny daffodil plant sits, looking perky as ever despite the snowstorm behind the walls. It’s a reminder of a project I was recently working on: “Bloom where you’re planted,” the words passed on to me via my mother. I appropriately woodburned, and then painted, the flower of New Brunswick, the purple violet, on a piece of driftwood I found on the beach. I got a woodburner for my birthday last year and ever since then I’ve kept my eyes peeled for a nice piece of wood during nature walks. I gifted this to a young gal who was struggling finding happiness in the situation she was planted in. I encourage you, no matter where you are to really bloom, and make the most of where you are.
